Learning Computer Science Opens Doors

Learning Computer Science Opens Doors If I could go back to my teenage years and pick one skill to start learning younger, it would be programming. Learning computer science has opened countless doors for me, even though I started late and had very little formal training. I often think about how much further I would have progressed by now if I had started younger and been taught by someone other than the forums of StackOverflow. But the truth is that most teens don’t have the opportunity to learn programming because it’s not taught widely in school. This is why I’m so excited that TutorPace has decided to start offering online computer science tutoring. How it Opens Doors High-Paying Career According to Forbes, the average salary for someone with a computer science Bachelor’s degreewas $60,000 in 2013, compared to the average of $45,000 for all degrees. Differentiating Factor during Job Search Even if you don’t decide to work as a full-time software engineer, knowing how to program can still help you get a great job. I know this because it did for me. When I was searching for a job in the final semester of my MBA program, my ability to program landed me a great job as a Big Data Analyst. My brother had a similar experience. He was a graphic designer who learned how to program and build websites. He’s now the Creative Director at a design agency. Be Your Own Boss Knowing how to program can also enable you to become your own boss, in two different ways. First, if you have a business idea and decide to found a startup, your life will be much easier if you can program. It can save you from having to hire an expensive developer and being beholden to them every time you want a new feature or an upgrade to your website. Second, web developers can work as freelancers. You can either earn extra money on the side or set out on your own. I can tell you that my tutoring business would never have grown to what it is today if I didn’t know how to program. Without that knowledge, I couldn’t have built a tutor search engine that helps students find a tutor. And I couldn’t have built a tutor pricing calculator that helps tutors and students discover how much tutors charge near them. How to Learn Computer Science Now that you know how valuable computer science knowledge is, how can you begin to learn? Most of us eat a balanced diet throughout the day and have dinner later on. Dinner is usually the meal where we gain the most weight. There are several different types of tutorials available but they all fall into one of three main categories: face-to-face tutorials, online tutorials, and group tutorials.Face-to-face tutorials take place between just the tutor and one student. This means that all the tutor's attention is on you. While this is great for ensuring that you learn quickly, it also comes at a cost. Outside of your tutorials, the tutor will be preparing and planning your lessons and will factor this extra time into their hourly rates. Face-to-face tutorials are usually the most costly type of tutorial but they're also usually the most effective.Online tutorials are similar to face-to-face tutorials as they have the same tutor-student ratio. However, your tutor won't be in the same place as you. Instead, they'll teach you remotel y using a computer, webcam, and video conferencing software like Skype. Since the tutor doesn't have to travel to their students and can schedule more tutorials each week, they tend to charge less than their face-to-face counterparts. Finally, group tutorials are between one tutor and several students. With each student paying for the tutor's time, these tend to work out as the cheapest per student per hour. Unfortunately, the tutor won't be able to tailor the tutorials or the course to each student.

(Image Source: CC0 1.0, Free-Photos, Pixabay)Jazz fusion;Funk; orA combination of musical styles,You can certainly do so on a fusion drum kit. What’s more, you don’t have to be a novice drummer to play music on this type of kit â€" in fact, any ability level should be able to play on a fusion drum kit successfully!Ultimately, if you like playing different styles of music and would like to have a versatile drum kit, then a fusion kit could be right for you.Fusion drum kits can be great for beginners. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, Heyme, Pixabay)What To Look Out ForA fusion set is somewhere in between a standard rock n roll set and a smaller jazz set, with one of the greatest variations being the size of the bass drum. Its smaller size compared to a standard drum kit can make it easier to travel with and can also make it easier to tune. This can be helpful, for instance, if you gig regularly or have t o attend a roadshow.Below we highlight some of the main features that you might find in a fusion drum kit, including:The bass drum; The tom-toms;The snare drum; andThe cymbals.Although we outline some of the standard features that you might expect to see in these elements below, that’s not to say that there isn’t some room for personalisation if you would like to customise your kit in any way. After all, music is a form of self-expression, so don’t feel as though you absolutely have to conform to each of the standards below. Rather, see them as a guide and make your own mind up as to whether that particular type or size drum would work for you and your drumming style. For instance, if you'd rather use an electronic drum set to play fusion, then,  of course, you are free to, even if it may be preferable in some instances to use a dedicated fusion drum set.Check out Superprof to find some drum lessons. The Bass DrumArguably, the bass drum is the most important part of a fusion drum kit. It is the drum that has the deepest tone. Generally speaking, a fusion bass drum should measure around 20 inches, falling halfway between a jazz bass drum (usually 18 inches) and a rock bass drum (usually 22 inches). As a fusion kit tends to be smaller than a rock kit, it’s also common to see a fusion kit produce a quieter sound than a rock kit, which is something to bear in mind. The Tom-TomsA fusion drum set usually features three toms, the same number that you tend to find in a standard drum kit. However, the difference with the toms in a fusion kit is that they are generally smaller. Usually, you’ll see  10-inch, 12-inch and 14-inch toms. The Snare DrumAnother important element when it comes to a fusion drum set is the snare drum.Generally, you can expect to see a snare drum in a fusion kit measuring in at 14 inches. However, selecting a snare drum is a very personal choice. As a result, don’t be afraid to try out different snare drum sizes and shell thicknesses to find the combinations that work best for you.The CymbalsThere are plenty of different cymbals that you can add to your drum set to create new tones and personalise your own sound. If you’re starting to put a fusion drum kit together, one of the safest options is to start with buying two essentials â€" the hi-hat and the ride cymbal. When it comes to the hi-hat, you can usually buy one with a size of anywhere between 8 and 16 inches. However, when it comes to a hi-hat used in a fusion drum kit, you’re more likely to see one that falls between 10 and 14 inches.Equally, the ride cymbal usually measures between 18 and 24 inches, and will likely be the largest cymbal in your fusion drum kit. Bear in mind that in some fusion kits the ride cymbal might not be particularly durable. In such cases, have a think about whether it would be better to invest in a thicker cymbal that isn’t at as much risk of breaking with the slightest tap of a drumstick!Aside from the hi-hat and the ride cymbal, th ere are other cymbals that you could add to a fusion drum kit to personalise your kit if you wanted to. For example, you could add a splash or crash cymbal. Generally speaking:A splash cymbal measures between 8 and 12 inches; whileA crash cymbal measures between 13 and 22 inches.Regardless of what cymbals you end up choosing, try not to buy any cymbals before you’ve at least had a chance to try them out. This way, you’ll know that what you’re buying is best suited and personalised to you and how you would like to play. There are lots of different factors to consider when choosing a fusion drum kit. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, flockine, Pixabay)Which Fusion Drum Kit Is Right For Me?There are so many different ways to build up a drum kit. Often, how a person chooses a drum kit or how they decide to buy one will be a very personal decision. For instance, you might really value the ability to personalise your fusion drum kit as much as possible. In such cases, you might be better off bu ying each element of a fusion drum kit separately, so you have a chance to build the right sound and set-up for you.Equally, if you’re happy to work with a more standard fusion drum kit, you might find it much easier to buy an off the shelf kit that’s complete with all the standard elements you’d likely see in a fusion drum kit. What’s more, there are other factors to take into consideration, such as:How much room you have for a drum kit at home or in a studio;Whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced drummer; How far your budget will stretch when it comes to buying a drum kit; andWhether you’re set on buying a particular brand, such as Mapex, Zildjian, Rolanda, Yamaha, or Gretsch. All of these elements end up making a drum kit choice incredibly personal, so make sure that when the time does come to buy your next drum kit, you think about whether you’re happy with the price you’re paying, what elements you’re getting, whether you want to buy any other instrum ents, and how comfortable you are playing with the kit.Looking for drum lessons in the UK? Superprof's got you covered. It's also worthwhile trying out the various items of drum hardware if you can before you buy them. Regardless of whether you're looking at buying a complete drum set, snare drums, drum head, drumsticks, a new pedal, or even a metronome or microphone, testing everything out is a great way to know whether it's the right purchase for you.Although it can take time finding the perfect percussion instrument for you, spending some extra time researching and trying out different types of kit can pay off in the long run.If you found this useful, why not check out our blog on how to drum without a drum set!

4 Questions to Ask Your Child About School

4 Questions to Ask Your Child About School Through report cards, parent-teacher conferences, and grades posted online, tracking your childs educational progress is often relatively easy to do. Aside from these mediums, though, one of the best ways parents can assess progress is by having regular conversations with their student. This will help you not only gauge how theyre doing, but also teach them to reflect meaningfully on what theyre working on in school. Questions to ask your child about school include what they find interesting, areas where they encounter confusion, and their favorite activities. Looking to help your student finish the school year on a good note? Keep reading to learn four questions to ask your child about school. Question #1 to ask your child about school: What do you know, what do you want to know, and what have you learned? KWLwhich stands for know, want to know, and learnedis a series of questions that may already be familiar to your child, as some teachers begin units by filling out KWL charts as a class. This technique works at home too, and is best for gauging progress on a specific subject, unit, or concept. Have your child list things that they know about a concept, as well as what they want to know. This is especially helpful to do during a unit to see how theyre progressing through the quarter or semester. At the end of the unit or course, ask them what theyve learned. Is there anything theyve been exposed to, but still dont quite understand? Have they learned everything they wanted to know? A mismatch between the want to know and learned columns could signify one of two things: Theres something that you and your child should focus on and make sure to clarify as the class moves on. Theres an interest of your childs beyond what the course is designed to teach. This could be a place to explore and expand in terms of your childs academic or personal interests. [RELATED: How Parents Can Help Students Setand AchieveAcademic Goals] Question #2 to ask your child about school: What do you find interesting about [a specific subject]? KWL charts can be a wonderful tool, but sometimes students say theyve learned nothing at school when asked. One way to better focus your conversation is to ask about whats interesting about a subject or class instead. When your child talks about the subject, notice the way they speak about it and if they seem to have a strong grasp of the subject. This information can help clue you in on how confident your child feels in the given subject, and whether or not that confidence matches their comprehension of the material. [RELATED: 3 Questions to Ask Your Students Teacher Before The School Year Ends] Question #3 to ask your child about school: What do you find confusing about [a specific subject]? Similarly, asking whats confusing about a subject can help you learn more about how your child experiences school or a specific class. This may be difficult for your child to even put into words, but its a worthwhile endeavor and will often shed light on whats happening in class. Some follow-up questions can include: What do you do when youre confused in class? Does your teacher notice or know when youre confused about something? What does the teacher do when you or your classmates are confused? This might be a great time to offer some in-class or at-home strategies for your child to use when they get stuck. Consider their personality; when a student is shy or simply nervous to express their confusion in front of the whole class, suggest that your child write a note to the teacher or ask to speak to the teacher while other students are working on an assignment. Question #4 to ask your child about school: What are your favorite and least favorite activities? Finally, assessing your students educational progress can include getting a sense of class activitiesincluding what they enjoy and dont enjoy, as well as what activities are most or least helpful. This can help you understand the ways in which your child participates in class, works with other students, and how they best learn material. [RELATED: How to Support Your Stressed Student] The answers to any of these questions about school are great for you to help your child make a plan for how to best use homework time, in addition to coming up with strategies and things to do in class that will help them make the most of class time if theyre confused. This information would also be good to bring up in a conference with a teacher or guidance counselor. Remember that your childs teacher is on the same team as you to help your child succeed, and sharing information can help to best accomplish this. Any topics you want to know more about? Let us know! Why Your Lead Guitar Riffs May Be Boring Your Audience

Why Your Lead Guitar Riffs May Be Boring Your Audience Sign up successful Why Your Lead Guitar Technique May Be Boring Your Audience July 1, 2013/0 Comments/in Guitar, TakeLessons Teachers /by Suzy S. Do you love watching a guitarist rip into a great solo and wish you could dazzle audiences with your killer guitar skills? Learning how to play lead guitar that really sets an audience on fire is about so much more than playing really fast or using complicated techniques. Scottsdale guitar teacher David D. shares his secret to crafting a guitar solo the smart way! Playing lead guitar, or soloing, consists of a lot more than just playing riffs and exhibiting one’s proficiency on the instrument. We’ve all heard the lead guitarist who is so fast, so good, and so famous playing and oh, it’s really impressive, but after a few minutes of it your mind has wandered off and you’re yawning because it’s also…  boring! The guitarist is fast, extremely proficient, very famous and…. boring. Why? What is the difference between this guitarist and the one you could (and perhaps do) listen to over and over? The difference is structure. A smart lead guitarist plays to the audience instead of his or her ego! In order to get the audience’s attention, structure catches the listeners ear, much as the songs melody or beat make the song palatable in the first place. By using a recognizable pattern, or structure, the guitarist says to the audience, “Here, latch on to this…     have you got it? Are you following what I’m doing?” And that is just the beginning. From there the pattern will deviate; what I call a Complimentary Pattern: still holding the same structure but now doing a variation. And the audience is thinking, “I know what he’s doing and I love it,” because they are able to recognize and follow the STRUCTURE! Next comes one of two things: a Finish Pattern, which brings resolution to that segment of the solo, an ending if you will; or the guitarist at that point begins the same pattern and takes it somewhere else altogether! Surprise! You were following the structure, the variations… you were right with him and then WHOA â€" DIDN’T SEE THAT COMING! And then perhaps back in to the original pattern just to say “You’re fine â€" you’re still with me â€" isn’t this cool?” div.InlineCTA { display: flex; justify-content: space-between; padding: 20px 0; } #top form.InlineCTA-Form { margin-bottom: 0; } form.InlineCTA-Form div.InlineCTA-Inputs { align-items: flex-start; display: flex; } #top form.InlineCTA-Form input { background: white; border: 1px solid #111; border-radius: 20px; display: inline-block; font-size: 12px; margin: 10px 5px 10px 0; padding: 6px 15px; width: 200px; } form.InlineCTA-Form input::placeholder { font-size: 12px; } form.InlineCTA-Form button { background: #4f6f96; border-radius: 20px; color: white; display: inline-block; margin-top: 9px; padding: 6px 15px; text-transform: uppercase; font-family: Open Sans, sans-serif; font-weight: 500; letter-spacing: 2px; } form.InlineCTA-Form .BlogCTA-Result { display: none; } form.InlineCTA-Form .BlogCTA-Result.Success { display: block; font-size: 13px; } form.InlineCTA-Form .BlogCTA-Result.Error { color: red; display: block; font-size: 11px; } form.InlineCTA-Form .BlogCTA-Result.Error .BlogCTA-SuccessMessage { display: none; } @media only screen and (max-width: 500px) { .InlineCTA-Image { display: none; } } Curious how lessons work? The key is STRUCTURE. I’ll end with an analogy, that of learning to walk. At first thought it’s just put one foot forward, shift weight to it, other foot forward… repeat. But if you think about it, the way a person walks defines who they are, how theyre feeling, their intent, their attitude, their aptitude and even how they are thinking at the time. And so it is with soloing on the guitar; you are showing the audience how you think and feel, your intent and attitude, and even defining who you are within that song! Powerful? Yes. And it’s all up to you to give your playing much, much more than just “riffs and proficiency”!  David D. teaches guitar, bass guitar and songwriting lessons in Scottsdale, AZ.
